The Iraq Museum in Baghdad is a unique place, not only for archaeologists. It is a window on the past of Mesopotamia and the history of mankind, as it preserves an extraordinary variety of artefacts that go from prehistorical times down to the Ottoman period.

In 2015, many years after the looting of 2003, the Iraqi authorities decided for its reopening. The Italians greatly contributed to the success of the project, as they realized the new outfitting of almost all the ground floor.

The reopening of the Museum is a strong signal that states the importance of History and the necessity of protecting the cultural heeritage, especially in a time of senseless attacks.

Nineveh, an Assyrian capital between past and present.

Nineveh, an Assyrian capital between past and present.

Venezia – Dorsoduro 1686, San Sebastiano, Aula Colonne, July, 8 – October, 31, 2015

The pictures of the reliefs of the Sennacherib’s “Palace without rivals”, displayed in the exhibition, were taken in 2002 during two survey campaigns aimed at producing an updated and detailed documentation of the state of preservation of the throne suite’s orthostats.

The pictures were taken by Angelo Rubino, photographer of the IsCR; these already were the objects of two past exhibitions, held at the Archivio di Stato of Turin and the Iraq Museum of Baghdad.

Curators of the exhibition are Carlo Lippolis, Stefano de Martino (Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino per il Medio Oriente e l'Asia) and Lucio Milano (Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici, Università Ca' Foscari of Venice).
