Opening of the didactic room for children at the Iraq Museum of Baghdad

On the 14th of January 2020, the didactic room for children has been inaugurated at the Iraq Museum of Baghdad. The project has been supported by the European Union and represents one of the goals of the EDUU Project (Education and Cultural Heritage Enhancement for Social Cohesion in Iraq), coordinated by the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna in collaboration with the Centro Ricerche e Scavi of Turin, the University of Turin, the Iraq Museum and the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage of Iraq. The didactic room is equipped with a video station (for which a cartoon on the importance of the Iraqi cultural heritage preservation was created) and with games and educational maps.

ANNOUNCEMENT CRAST

The Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino per il Medio Oriente e l'Asia does share the concern expressed by many Institutions for intentional targeting of Iranian cultural heritage sites and condemns it in unequivocal terms. The 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and ratifications prohibit the intentional destruction of cultural heritage during armed conflict. The CRAST calls upon International Institutions to protect civilians and cultural heritage in Iran and all over the world. The CRAST stands with other professional societies concerned about the preservation of cultural heritage in Iran.

On Thursday 5 December 2019, on the occasion of the exhibition “Sulle sponde del Tigri. Suggestioni dalle collezioni archeologiche del MAO da Seleucia e Coche ", the MAO Museum of Oriental Art hosts the conference "Sulle sponde del Tigri. Le Collezioni del MAO da Seleucia e Coche ". The speakers, which collaborate with the Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino, will present some reflections on the history and main results of the archaeological investigations in the two cities of central Mesopotamia, on the relevance of finds from these excavations which are collected in Turin and on the use of new technologies for the cataloguing, the documentation and the dissemination of archaeological material.

On the occasion of the exhibition “Sulle sponde del Tigri. Suggestioni dalle collezioni archeologiche del MAO: Seleucia e Coche” (MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale, 21 September 2019 - 12 January 2020), the MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale hosts a lecture regarding the archaeology of Buddhism in Swat. The conference, about the results obtained during over 60 years of archaeological activities in one of the crucial regions of Buddhism, will be held by Professor Ciro Lo Muzio, professor at the Italian Institute of Oriental Studies of the University of Rome La Sapienza.

The University of Torino co-organises the international conference " Cultural Heritage and Illicit Trafficking in a Fragmented Middle East" on Thursday, 17 October 2019, Aula Magna Rettorato, via Verdi 8. The conference deals with the political situation of states such as Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, and the damages suffered by cultural heritage in those countries. The Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino participates in the conference entitled "Protocolli di intervento e best practices nell’archeologia a rischio", which will be held on Monday 16 September 2019 at the Complesso Monumentale del San Michele in Rome, organized by the Istituto Centrale per l’Archeologia.

The CRAST’s activities of protection and preservation of the Iraqi archaeological heritage and of support to the Iraqi authorities will be presented within the speech of Professor Stefano de Martino and Professor Carlo Lippolis entitled "Gli interventi del Centro Scavi Torino in Iraq per il recupero del patrimonio culturale iracheno”

Exhibition “Sulle sponde del Tigri. Suggestioni dalle collezioni archeologiche del MAO: Seleucia e Coche”

On Saturday, the 21st of September 2019, the exhibition “Sulle sponde del Tigri. Suggestioni dalle collezioni archeologiche del MAO: Seleucia e Coche", dedicated to the collection of archaeological finds from the excavations conducted since 1964 by the Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino at the Mesopotamian capitals Seleucia and Coche and stored  in the museum of Turin, opens to the public. This exhibit, developed in the frame of the project Collezioni (in)visibili, represents an extraordinary opportunity for bringing to the knowledge of a large audience the history of these cities, and the history of the Turin researchers who discovered them.

New archaeological expedition at Old Nisa (Turkmenistan)

On Tuesday 3 September 2019 the field activities of the CRAST archaeologists directed by Professor Carlo Lippolis at Old Nisa in Turkmenistan start again. The expedition, which will end on Saturday 5 October 2019, provides for the opening of new stratigraphic soundings and the re-examination of sectors already partially investigated during the last archaeological missions.

Italian Archaeological Mission at Karakorum (Mongolia), second campaign

The Italian Archaeological Mission at Karakorum works on a project of public archaeology funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; on July 22, the second season of activities on the field begins.

The CRAST archaeology are going to work together with the Educational Department of the MAO-Museum of Oriental Art of Turin and the colleagues of the Museum of Karakorum in order to elaborate a set of set of educational activities for schoolchildren visiting the Kharakhorum Museum.

In the meantime, the CRAST archaeologists will start interviewing the local population; interviews will be used as a starting point for future actions aiming at promoting the historical-archaeological heritage of the Kharkhorin-Karakorum area and disseminating the results of archaeological research.

Eighth Italian archaeological mission at Tulul al-Baqarat

Eighth campaign (March 30 - May 23, 2019)

A new excavation season started at Tulul al-Baqarat by the team of the Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino directed by Professor C. Lippolis. The archaeologists planned to continue simultaneously the stratigraphic analyses in the two main excavation sectors, the enclosure of the religious complex on TB1 and the architectural structures for the access to the central terrace on TB7, investigated on the eastern slope of the relief.

The International Workshop “Archaeological Landscapes of Mesopotamia between Prehistory and the Islamic Period (ALaM): Formation, Transformation, Protection and Enhancement” presents the results of some innovative landscape archaeology projects conducted by Italian universities (Udine, Milan, Turin, and Venice) and institutions. The CRAST participates by submitting the preliminary results of the ancient landscape analyses of the Mesopotamian archaeological areas of Tulul al- Baqarat and Seleucia.
